Throughout
Van Gogh’s letters, he refers to his floral paintings with great enthusiasm
for their color. But sunflowers always had a special meaning for him.
At his funeral, his friend and model, Dr. Paul Gachet, brought a bunch
of yellow sunflowers to lay on the painter’s coffin, while others arrived
with dahlias and more yellow blossoms.
