Pierre Auguste
Renoir (1841-1919). French Impressionist -
Born in Limoges, France on February 25, 1841
.
Renoir began painting as a child in a porcelain factory in Paris .
He painted designs on china going on to copy paintings on lampshades
and fans. Renoir went on to study painting in 1862-53 under Charles
Gabriel Gleyre in Paris, France. Renoir became friends Monet and admired
th Monet's paining effects of light . In 1874 Renoir joined the new
impressionist painters in their the first exhibition. In 1883 Renoir
held a solo exhibit at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris. He was as
interested in painting the human figure as he was the landscape and
still lifes of flower and fruit. Many of hismost famous paintings
show the interactions of people in their daily lives. Among these
are the famous "Luncheon of the Boating Party", " Les
Deux Soeurs", "The Swing", "Woman with Fan",
and "Dance at Bougival". Pierre Auguste Renoir saw beauty
in the subjects he painted whether the nude female form, pretty landscapes,
still lifes or pretty children. He wanted to portray the beautiful
side of life - remarking their were enough unpleasant things as it
was. Renoir became crippled with rheumatism in last years yet continued
to paint until his death in 1919.
